The Human Person: Biofact or Artifact? Toward a New Concept of Life
New technologies including implantations, reproductive medicine and stem cell research call into question the distinction between nature and technology. As a result, science-fiction images of human beings as “biofacts”, composite beings that are both natural and artificial, is becoming a reality. What implications does this fact have for our understanding of growth and of life itself? Are we required to give up our notions of human autonomy and responsibility, or does biofacticity allow for an understanding of life as growth in experience without reducing it to natural processes or functions of the genetic code?
